Goal Setting Method

There is really no one goal setting method. Most people create their own goal setting method. Some work and many do not. Remember all of those New Year’s resolutions that you never got around to keeping. Even though there is no one method, there ae certain components of a goal that will make success more likely.

Goals should always be written in the present tense. Writing in the present tense makes the goal seem more real. If you write a goal in the future tense as most people do, that goal always seems just out of reach. I will lose weight is an example of one of the most common goals. The future tense puts the diet in the future, probably the proverbial Monday diet day. A better goal is to say I am starting my diet today. I am not putting my diet off a day longer. The change starts today.

Always write the goal in a positive manner. I am going to lose weight rather than I am fat so I need to lose weight. Being positive rather than negative helps you to keep a good attitude which is essential to keeping the goal.

Allowing for failue is another great component of goal planning. If you cannot face failure, you will never be able to keep your goals. Learn from failure and strive to keep going. No one is perfect so keeping our goals will be fraught with problems. Many people use failure as an excuse to quit. Instead of quitting make the decision to start all over again and be succesful this time.

When you are writing out your goals, be sure to add as much detail as possible. The more detail that you write, the more chance you have of success. Doing the tough planning before the implementation of the goal will help you when the times get difficult.

Be realistic in your goals. No one can lose 50 pounds in a month even if she is going to he high school reunion. It’s not possible. Be specific about your goal but being realistic is of paramount importance. An unrealistic goal is as bad as no goal at all. You are simply setting yourself up for failure. Making smaller goals is a much better idea.

When you set a goal, try your best to attain it. If you fail, take responsibility and then try again. No excuses. Don’t rationalize your failure or blame others. If you fail ultimately it is your fault. Don’t obsess; just start over. It’s not the end of the world.

Sometimes you need to apply some self-discipline to help you reach your goals. Goals are not easy to reach or everyone would keep their New Year’s resolutions.

Goals are the way we improve our lives. Without goals our lives remain static. Make a goal, keep a goal, and feel successful. The goal setting method that suits you best is always the way to go. Create yours and get started making change in your life.
