Goal Setting Lesson Plans

One of the greatest lessons a teacher can help students with is goal setting. Although goal setting lesson plans are rarely covered in academic text resources, a good teacher can always devise ways of teaching goals. All she needs is a little ingenuity and creativity to create great goal setting lesson plans.

Elementary school is the perfect place to teach students to set goals for themselves. There are three types of goals: academic goals, character goals, and process goals. Teaching kids to set these types of goals is a wonderful way of improving class performance and behavior. Of course, students who set goals are much more productive and perform better in school, especially as they enter high school,

A great goal setting lesson plan is to read the students a story. Everyone loves story hour especially if the teacher is enthusiastic and fun. If the class is working on character goals, the story should present some type of positive character trait that you want the students emulate. After reading the story have the students explain why the main character made good choices. Discuss why these good choices had the intended consequences. You might also discuss what different choices might have resulted in. Next ask students to list goals the main character made for himself and why.

The last part of the goal setting lesson plan helps students to make a goal of their own. Ask students to choose one of the goals listed for them. The character goal should be attainable and positive. Finally, ask the students to write their parents a short note saying-I am going to pick up my toys without complaining or I am going to do my homework every day and not complain. At the end of the week, have the parents write a short note about whether or not the goal has been attained.

Another type goal is an academic goal. In this goal setting lesson plan, the teacher asks each student to write down one way he can improve his grades. For example, he might write that he will study his spelling every day before the test to improve his spelling grades. Or he might write that he will make an effort to improve his handwriting by practicing each day. At the end of the week, have the students journal a few sentences about whether or not they attained their goal.

Process goals are the way in which you do your schoolwork. Have students write down the mistakes they make and why they make them. Obviously, mistakes cause lower grades. Explain that if they can improve their process, their grades will follow. Most of all work must be done on time. Assignments must be finished by the deadline. Another reason for a lower grade is neatness. After you have explained the reasons for lower grades, allow students to choose one to improve upon. After a month, write them a letter about their progress or lack of progress. Explain why they are attaining their process goal or not.

Goal setting lesson plans are a very important facet of a child’s education. Learning to set goals is one of the most important lessons any child can learn.
