Goal Setting Activities for Kids
![]() |
Children love to have fun and enjoy learning activities that teach a lesson but are at the same time enjoyable. Everyone loves story hour including the teacher. Using story hour to teach goal setting is a perfect goal setting activity for kids.
Many children’s stories deal with behavior because character education is very important. In this day and time, many children do not receive the proper training from their parents so it is up to the public school system to step up and become character educators. Because many children’s stories deal with cute little baby animals, students are engaged in the stories and see their own behaviors in the animals. After story hour, the teacher and her students can discuss the stories. If the baby animal misbehaved as many of them do, the discussion should center around the bad behavior. The teacher can ask her students what the baby should have done or what they would have done.
After a clean discussion of the story, the teacher can lead the children into a goal setting activity. The teacher can ask the students what goal can the baby animal work on that would keep him out of trouble. After a complete discussion, the teacher can relate the baby animal’s behavior to their own. Help the group to set a goal that will help them to behave better. If the animal strayed away from his home, help the children to set the goal of never leaving home without their parents’ knowledge. If the baby animal sassed his mother, help them to make the goal of always respecing their parents. Using story hour for goal setting activities is a great way to present behaviors to children so that they will understand and relate.
Older student still need goal setting activities. High school teachers spend many hours planning goal setting activities for kids. Especially freshmen in high school need help with goal setting. One tried and true activity is to have student keep a journal. They should journal about their hopes and dreams. After journaling for a few weeks, have them write down where they would like to be in four years. Their goals should be set with an end in mind. If they plan to go to college, they should set goals that will make that happen. If they look forward to a Career Tech school, they should set goals that will help them to be ready for Tech schools.
After the goals are set from the journaling, teachers can talk to each student privately to make sure that the goals will fit the end result. Those kids who want to go to college should have very high academic goals. If they don’t the teacher should provide a reality check. These private meetings are a priceless way to see that freshmen set goals to achieve their career goals. They are also a great way for the teacher to bond with her students.
Goal setting activities for kids are a great way to help children realize their potential. Without goals children are like a boat without a rudder. They must be taught goal setting and planning.
