Examples of Goal Setting

You probably have set goals for yourselves in your lifetime, whether written or in thought. We more than likely never wrote down the goals but we worked very hard to accomplish the goals. Whether we succeeded or not, at least we tried to set some goals. Basically, there are three types of goals; they are character, academic, and process goals.
When we are very young, we start to learn to set character goals. In fact most of our character is built before we reach adulthood. One of the most important jobs of parents is to teach their children to set character goals. Obviously, parents don’t sit their children and tell them to write down behavior goals. Our children need to learn behavior goals before they can even write. We teach our children to manners as soon as they can understand the concept.
Character goals are, simply put, the behavioral norms we expect people to understand. School children need to learn very basic character goals. Some of these goals are to stay in their seats, to speak only when called upon, not to cheat, and not to steal. These basic goals are the bulwark of American education. Without these character goals, school is chaos. If children have problems with these character goals, they will always have problems in school.
Examples of goal setting help students to understand the value of setting goals. Sometimes story hour can be used to help students to set a new goal. If the teacher is having trouble with students being tardy to class after recess, she can read them The Pokey Puppy. The puppy was always getting into trouble because he was always late. Have the students make the goal of getting back to class on time. Reward them if no one is tardy for a week. Then everyone can tackle another goal. It’s never too early to learn character goals that will help us become better students and eventually citizens
Academic goals are pretty simple to understand. A very basic example is to make the goal of doing all homework on time. Students can create a chart and check off each day they did all of their homework. When a week is over and all homework is finished on time, give each student a sticker. Kids love stickers that praise them. Stickers are a wonderful award. Any child who doesn’t get a sticker will work harder the next week just to get the sticker. Other academic goals include, meeting deadlines, studying for tests, and taking notes in class. A check list works for these types of goals too,
Process goals are the way in which we accomplish tasks. An example of a process goal is I will do my homework without complaining. Another example is I will do my work as neatly as I possibly can. Still another is I will not hurry through my work so that I can get finished before everyone else. Therefore, process goals help kids to improve in their behavior and in academics.
Setting goals is very important if we are to be successful in life. Without goals we are aimless drifters. The earlier we learn to set character, academic, or process goals the better off we are.
