Educational Goal Setting for High School Students

Although the high school years may be the highlight of your life, they also set the foundation for the rest of your life. Often high school sets the stage for the failure or success of a teen’s future career. Therefore, educational goal setting for high school students is essential.
Because the transition from middle school to high school is often fraught with problems, many high schools have begun to separate their freshmen from the upper grades. The freshman academies are the perfect transition to high school because students are given more attention and more chances to attain success. Also, a great deal of time is given to educational goal setting for high school students. Most freshman academies do not track academic classes. Therefore, ninth graders do not have to choose between the College Prep Diploma or the Career Tech Diploma. This freshman year is their time to make choices and to from their educational goals.
During the year in the freshman academy, teachers work especially hard to help their students to make education goals. Educational goal setting for high school students, especially freshmen, is often difficult. They simply cannot see the proverbial end of the tunnel. High school graduation seems a very far off reality. To help student develop goals, teachers provide each student with an assignment book for their freshman year free of charge. Each academic teacher takes class time to remind students to write assignments in their book and to record grades and deadline. Teacher spot check the assignment books and gives daily grades for completed books. Parents are made aware of these assignment books and are asked to sign them weekly so that they will know exactly what their child’s strength’s and weaknesses are.
Another way to help freshmen learn goal setting is by peer mentoring. High school seniors regularly attend the freshman activity period. When students hear about educational goal setting for high school students from seniors, they actually listen because these seniors were once in their shoes. Often the seniors who talk to the freshmen are football players, class officers, drama student, and cheerleaders. These students have set goals for themselves and are ready for the challenge of graduation. They can help students set goals that will lead to high school success.
During the activity period teaches also work with goal setting. One really good activity is the goal setting game. Students are asked to brain storm in groups so that they can come up with two goals that will lead to high school success. Then the teacher has a leader from each group report their goals and are asked to write them on the board. After all of the goals are on the board, the class will vote on which two goals they want to work on for the month. The goal might be as simple as not being tardy to class or as difficult as passing all of their tests for the week. After the goal period, the teacher and class will discuss their successes and failures.
Another great way to promote goal setting is to ask representatives from various popular colleges visit the freshmen and tell them what the school looks for when deciding to accept or reject applicants. Then the activity period teacher can help students make plans to be sure that they follow a path that will help them attend the college of their dreams.
High school goal setting for high school students is very important and vital for the success of students. With the freshman academy, goal setting is a vital part of the success of the program.
